En tout respect pour les autres, GENOCIDE a vraiment fait partie des pionniers de ce style, même si on ne peut pas dire qu’il l’ait inventé. Peu de temps après la sortie de cette démo, il est apparu qu’apparemment, beaucoup de groupes s’appelaient déjà Genocide (dont à cette époque, un groupe culte du Massachusetts avec à sa tête Bobby Ebz, et aussi un groupe Japonais). Le groupe a donc changé son nom en REPULSION pour éviter les confusions. C’est aussi en 1986 qu’Evil Chuck Schuldiner, des pionniers du Death Metal DEATH (lui-même de retour chez lui après une désastreuse et brève implication chez les Canadiens de SLAUGHTER) demanda à Scott et à Matt de venir en Floride, pour intégrer DEATH. Ils acceptèrent et REPULSION fut mis en veilleuse pour un court moment. Mais ça ne fonctionna pas et les gars revinrent dans le Michigan, tandis que Chuck s’en alla pendant quelque temps en Californie (une autre histoire en elle-même), et REPULSION fut reformé en moins de temps qu’il ne faut pour le dire ! Pour célébrer ce retour, le groupe enregistra son LP culte, "Slaughter of the Innocent" avec Doug Earp, à Flint, Michigan. Le LP était sensé sortir sur le propre label de Earp, Wyatt Earp Records, mais ça n’arriva jamais et cet album n’est donc jamais paru en vynil… Le groupe continua à répandre le chaos et son thrash extreme durant 1987, jusqu’à ce que Matt Olivo entre dans l’armée. REPULSION joua son dernier show en Janvier 1988. Ce n’est qu’en 1989 que les membres de CARCASS, Bill Steer et Jeff Walker (qui venaient de créer leur label Necrosis Records) obtinrent la permission de sortir le LP « Slaughter of Innocents » sur leur propre structure.

En changeant le nom de l’album pour « Horrified », ils permirent à REPULSION d’être reconnus comme les maîtres incontestés du death/grind avec leurs 18 titres, avec une production vraiment spéciale et sauvage (ce son de basse crunchy si caractéristique de Scott, souvent imité mais jamais dupliqué et les fameux blast-beats, repris depuis par tout le monde) et un style nouveau sur cette scène à l’époque, encore original aujourd’hui. Grâce à l’extraordinaire succès de cet album (boosté par une distribution et une licence chez Earache Records), le groupe se réunit en tant que trio en Janvier 1991 (Matt étant toujours engagé dans l’armée) pour enregistrer une démo intitulée « Rebirth ». Quelques mois plus tard, Relapse Records sortit 2 titres de cette fameuse démo sur un 45 tours, nommé « Excruciation ».

Ce retour fut bien accueilli et permis au groupe une renaissance au niveau de l’intérêt que la scène lui portait et assez vite, Relapse obtint les droits pour sortir aux USA « Horrified » en 1992, avec comme bonus track, un titre de la démo de GENOCIDE (« Black Nightmare »).

Le groupe joua alors quelques shows occasionnels aux USA et cette même année, Matt put assurer quelques shows, libéré par l’armée. En 1993, le groupe arrêta finalement. Mais avec un tel statut légendaire, les REPULSION resteront comme les vrais Godfathers du Grinding Death Thrash, avec beaucoup d’imitateurs mais aucun équivalent. HAIL TO REPULSION !

(Note de Will : Ce n’est que récemment que le groupe est revenu pour faire quelques shows ponctuels aux USA, et même 2 shows en Europe (dont un au Tatoo The Mind festival, à Nancy, le 30 octobre dernier – 1er show en Europe ! – puis en Espagne en janvier). On verra par la suite ce que ça va donner… L’espoir fait vivre) !

A part les influences citées plus haut, quelles sont les « recent shits » (groupes) qui vous ont aussi botté le cul ? « Recent shits » ? He he, j’aime bien cette expression… Je suis complètement largué en ce qui concerne les groupes récents. Mais il est évident que des groupes comme Black Sabbath, Slayer, Metallica, Venom, Motorhead, DRI, COC, Misfits, Raw Power ou encore Larm restent des influences… C’était bon tout ça.

Pensez-vous que vous avez vraiment crée le grind core ou laissez-vous cette paternité à Napalm Death ? Je pense que ça a été pendant un moment un vrai sujet de discussion. Nous avons réfléchi par rapport aux autres, pour savoir ce qu’ils en pensaient et finalement on se retrouve sur les mêmes choses. Peut-être qu’un historien pourrait dire qui est apparu en premier avec un album, mais ça n’a probablement pas beaucoup d’intérêt. REPULSION est simplement fier d’y avoir contribué et de recevoir encore à l’heure actuelle une telle reconnaissance pour ça, après tant d’années !

Quel est le feeling de pouvoir se dire qu’on est des légendes vivantes du Metal extrême et de se dire qu’on a influencé tant de groupes, partout dans le monde ? Es-tu conscient de ça et es-ce que ce type de pensée te donne une pression particulière quant à votre come-back ? Well, soyons clairs, ce n’est pas vraiment un come-back… mais plus une réunion pour finir le boulot inachevé, comme botter le cul des gens avant que nous ne quittions cette dimension !… Quant à cette histoire d’influence sur les autres… wow, quel honneur ! Nous pouvons seulement rester humbles, s’incliner et ensuite dire « fuck yeah » !!! Il n’y a donc par conséquent aucune pression. REPULSION est, et a toujours été, juste un groupe composé de 4 mecs qui jouent une musique qui te fera pisser du sang.

Vous avez été, Scott et toi, pendant quelques mois, membres de DEATH. Peux-tu nous parler de cette époque et aussi de Chuck, stp… Ça n’a duré en fait que 3-4 mois en 1985. J’étais toujours au Lycée et Chuck avait un job dans un fast-food, appelé Del Taco. La première fois où je l’ai rencontré, c’était marrant : il avait cette uniforme débile et il avait ses cheveux sous dans une casquette. Scott, Chuck et moi-même avons passé de grands moments cet été-là. Nous étions à fond dans le Death Metal et dans le mode de vie des Metalfreaks ! Hélas, le sort s’est abattu sur nous dans sa pire incarnation ! Notre batteur (Kam Lee) s’est barré et à cette époque, il n’y avait aucune scène Metal en Floride, animée par plusieurs groupes comme maintenant. Nous étions faits. La mort de DEATH. La frustration n’est pas un mot assez fort pour décrire dans quel état nous étions. Mais au final, ça s’est révélé être un mal pour un bien, parce que le monde a quand même eu DEATH et a aussi reçu REPULSION.

Peux-tu nous dire pourquoi la carrière de REPULSION est resté au stade de quasi néant pendant toutes ces années ? C’est la conséquence d’avoir été trop en avance sur notre temps. Nous sommes et nos resterons comme quelque chose de difficilement acceptable. La grande majorité de la communauté metal underground ne nous reconnaît toujours pas, mais adore les groupes que nous avons influencés ! Ainsi va la vie…

Peux-tu nous dire aussi pourquoi, alors que vous revenez sur le devant de la scène, Aaron Freeman ne fait plus partie de l’aventure ? Oh, mais il l’a été ! Il a joué avec nous en tête d’affiche du Milwaukee Metalfest XVII en 2003, à la Baltimore Deathfest et aussi à notre show chez nous, au Machine Shop, à Flint, Michigan. Il nous a depuis quittés, mais nous restons de toute façon amis.

A chaque fois, il y a des rumeurs qui circulent autour de vous. Finalement, qu’en est-il de ce deuxième album qui n’est jamais sorti et de cette demo de 1992, inachevée ? Nous n’avons aucun projet pour enregistrer quelque chose de nouveau. Cependant, un DVD live et un CD live sont en projet. Ça, ce n’est pas une rumeur (avec une voix à la Arnold Swarzenegger... lol) !

Pourquoi êtes-vous donc revenus depuis 2003 ? Quel est votre projet ? Nous sommes impliqués dans la sortie de ce DVD, de ce CD live qui ira avec et aussi impliqué dans un tribute à REPULSION qui verra le jour prochainement. Comment avez-vous vécu le voyage en France, en octobre dernier, pour ce concert au Tatoo The Mind Fest ? La France a vraiment été super. Les gens furent incroyables avec nous. Le concert fut aussi très pro. Nous nous sommes vraiment éclatés avec nos potes Col Jones (drums, du groupe CRETIN) et Matt Harvey (de EXHUMED). Pour l’Espagne, dernièrement, ce fut pareil ! Kick ass ! Madrid est une super ville, mais évitez les saucissons rouges (il veut parler certainement du chorizo) ! Matt s’en est gavé et il a fini avec un empoisonnement alimentaire d’enfer !

Durant ce tatoo The Mind Fest, vous avez joué en tête d’affiche, juste après DESTRUCTION. Force est de reconnaître que pas mal de gens se sont barrés avant votre show. Vous étiez préparés à ça ? Tant pis pour eux ! Nous, on s’en branle. Même s’il n’était resté que toi dans le snakepit photos, Philippe et Malek, nous aurions quand même passé un excellent moment ! (NdWill : disons quand même que sur les 800 personnes présentes, seule une petite moitié avait assisté au show de REPULSION… et je peux vous dire qu’ils ont eu tort ceux qui se sont barrés !)

En marge de la sortie de ce DVD, y aura-t-il une tournée, spécialement en Europe ? Le DVD va sortir cette année mais rien n’est prévu comme tournée. Merci d’avoir posé cette question, bien essayé !

Tu dois certainement connaître ce site de fan sur le Web fait par un Français… Qu’est-ce que tu en penses ? C’est à mon avis très intéressant. Et que peut-on trouver sur votre site personnel ? (L’adresse de ce site est ; http://www.geocities.com/repulsion_band/index.html ) Oui, je le connais. Je pense que c’est vraiment cool. Ça fait un moment que c’est sur le Web. Quant au nôtre, vous pourrez trouver les news officielles du groupe ainsi que quelques downloads exclusifs, et puis aussi des dates de concerts, et des photos (NdWill : dont les miennes ! Yeah !)

Quel est ton avis sur ce qui est arrivé à Dimebag Darrel sur scène en décembre ? Penses-tu que les USA sont malades de la profusion des armes, ou juste peuplée de malades ? C’est un sujet profondément dérangeant, ce que tu me dis là ! Quelle grande perte ! Tout ce que je peux dire, c’est que j’espère que la famille de Dime pourra un jour être en paix avec ça ! C’est vraiment affreux ! Il n’y a aucune limite à un esprit vraiment dérangé !

Pour finir cette interview, que peut-on vous souhaiter pour 2005 ? Rien de spécial. Je veux juste remercier tous les fans qui nous supportent aux USA et aussi à l’étranger.

REPULSION ! Aaargghhh ! To interview this group was a dream which I cherished since I came in extreme Metal ! Because for everyone, they are those who invented the grind core in the Eighties, at the same time as Death Napalm on this side of the Atlantic... If you want to know where Shane Embury went to seek its sound of bass guitar, listen to "Horrified", the only album to date left by the gang of Michigan, you will understand better ! When in 2003, I learned the band remakes surface in the USA for some shows, I thought I dreamed and I said to myself that the Yankees were lucky as fuck. And then, by one fine day of September, a poster appears : Tattoo The Mind festival, in Nancy and Amnéville, France (Oct. 30th, 2004), where REPULSION is announced as headliners ! First concert of the band in Europe, since 1985 ! It’s what it was announced… I believed to waver there, on this blow... I thus went there and after the show, I asked Matt Olivo, the guitarist, if it agreed for an exclusive interview for Noiseweb ! And he accepted. Here thus a collector, let us not be afraid of the words, coz I think the guy had not given a lot of interviews in France in their 20 years of career ! That he is thus thanked for it, just like to have one day creating this music which revolutionized Metal, inserting it in the field of the extreme for our greatest pleasure...

Hailz Matt ! You know, I’m an old Repulsion fan, and it’s fuckin’ great you accept to answer this interview !!! First question : how did the Repulsion story start in the 80’s ? And what pushed you to create a so extreme music at this time ?
Matt Olivo : Here’s a reprint of a Repulsion web bio:
REPULSION were formed in 1985 under the name GENOCIDE in Flint,Michigan.They were influenced as by a wide variety of bands like DISCHARGE,CELTIC FROST/HELLHAMMER and NWOBHM music.The classic line up of Scott Carlson (vocals,bass),Aaron Freeman (guitar),Matt Olivo (guitar) and Dave Grave (drums) recorded the legendary "Stench of Burning Death" demo in January,1986.It was released to a tremendous response throughout the underground,and helped gain them a static following of fans of intense music with horror-inspired lyrics,a sub-genre of underground music still in its infancy.It was this foundation that ultimately became the basis of what is reknowned today as "grindcore"; in every respect,GENOCIDE were among the first wave of true pioneers of this style of music,if not the innovators.Shortly after release of the demo,it became apparent that many other bands with the name "Genocide" existed in the world (at the time,the cult band from Massachussets with Bobby Ebz as frontman and the classic heavy metal band from Japan were the most well-known).The band changed their name to REPULSION to avert any confusion and not to be mistaken for these other bands.It was also in 1986 that Evil Chuck Schuldiner of Florida Death Metal pioneers DEATH (who himself had just returned from a very brief and disatrous association with Canada's SLAUGHTER) asked Scott and Matt to move to Florida to become members of DEATH.They agreed,and REPULSION was put on hold for a short time.This arrangement did not work out,and in 1986 Scott and Matt returned to Michigan (while Evil Chuck went to San Francisco,California...another story in itself!!) and REPULSION was reborn after a brief hiatus.Upon their return,the band recorded their classic LP entitled "Slaughter of the Innocent" with Doug Earp in Flint,Michigan.The LP was originally intended to be released on Earp's own label,Wyatt Earp Records,but this never occured,and the album was nearly fated to never see a vynil release.The band continued to spread mayhem and extreme thrash on a small scale during 1987 until Matt Olivo joined the armed forces and REPULSION played their final show in January 1988.It wasn"t until 1989 when CARCASS members Bill Steer and Jeff Walker (who at the time were starting their own label Necrosis Records) obtained permission to release the "Slaughter of the Innocent" LP on their own label.Changing the name of the LP to "Horrified",the long-awaited release of the LP more than sealed REPULSION's fate as the undisputed masters of death/grind with 18 classic tracks,fierce and raw production (including the advent of the often imitated,but never duplicated, "Scott Carlson double-track bass sound" and the well-abused "blast-beat"),and their inimitable style,refreshlingly original even to this day.Due to the extreme popularity of the LP release (bolstered by distribution and licensing from Earache Records),REPULSION finally reunited as a three-piece band (Matt was still in the Army) and in January of 1991,recorded their demo intitled "Rebirth".Some months later,Relapse Records released two of the demo tracks as a 7" entitled "Excruciation".This well-received release of the band led to a renew in interest,and Relapse soon obtained the rights to license and re-issue "Horrified" in 1992,with a track from the GENOCIDE demo ("Black Nightmare") as a bonus track.The band continued to play occasional shows around the states,and in that same year,Matt returned from the army and re-joined the band for a while.In 1993,the band finally called it a day.As it is with band of such legendary statue,REPULSION will live forever as the true Godfathers of Grinding Death Thrash,with several imitators and no equal. Which are the bands that influenced you at the beginning ? And are there some recent shits that kicked your ass ? Matt : Recent shits? I like that…I’m out of touch when it comes to new bands. In the beginning there was Black Sabbath, Slayer, Metallica, Venom, Motorhead, DRI, COC, Misfits, Raw Power, Larm…and it was good.

Do you think you created the grind-core or do you let this paternity to Napalm Death ? Matt : I think it was one of those “zeitgeist” things. We were thinking what others around the world were thinking and it all happened nearly at once. Perhaps a historian could tell you who actually came out with an album first, but it probably doesn’t really matter. Repulsion is simply proud of what we’ve contributed and happy to receive the recognition for it many years later!

What is the feeling of being some living extreme metal legends and to say to yourselves that you influenced so many bands around the world ? Are you aware of this, and does this kind of thought give you a new form of pressure for your come-back ? Matt : Well, this isn’t really a come back…more like a reunion mission to take care of some unfinished business-Like kicking some peoples’ ass before we leave this dimension !!! As far as the influence thing…wow, what an honour. We can only humbly, take a bow and then say “fuck yeah!” There’s no pressure though. Repulsion, as it’s always been, is simply a band of four dudes playing music that makes you piss blood.

You were, Scott and you, former members of DEATH during some months. Can you speak about this time and about Chuck Schuldiner too, please ? Matt : It was only a 3-4 months period in 1985 that we did this. I was still in High School and Chuck had a job at a fast food place called “Del Taco.” It was funny the first time I met him…he was wearing this uniform and he had his hair tucked in a cap. Scott, myself and Chuck all had a great time that summer. We were all about the Death Metal and the lifestyle of Metal freaks! Alas, fate stepped in and reared its ugly face. Our drummer quit (Kam Lee) and since there was NO metal scene in Florida at the time, save for a hand full of bands, we were done. The death of Death. Frustrated doesn’t really begin to described how we felt. It was all for the better though. The world still got Death and it also received Repulsion.

Can you tell us why the career of REPULSION always remained to the state of quasi nothing ? Matt : It’s the curse of being too ahead of your time. We are and will always be aquired taste. The majority of the underground metal community still doesn’t get us, but they love the bands that were influenced by us. Such is life…

Can you tell us too why Aaron Freeman doesn’t form any more part of the adventure, just at the time when you reappear ? Matt : Oh, but he did. He played the headliner at Milwaukee Metalfest XVII in 2003, Baltimore Deathfest and the homecoming show at the Machine Shop in Flint, Michigan. He has since parted ways with us, but we all still remain friends.

Each time, there are some rumours around you. Finally, what about this never released new album, and this 1992 never finished demo ? Matt : We have no plans to record anything new. However an upcoming live DVD and live CD is in the works - “It’s not a rumour !” (Arnold Swarzenegger’s voice)

Why do you come back in 2004/2005 ? Which are your goals ? Which are your projects in a near future ? Matt : We’re focused on the DVD, live CD and I’m also helping with a tribute album too. How did you feel the trip in France, for this concert at the end of October ? Matt : France was amazing. The people were incredible. The gig was pro-all the way. We also had a great time with our fill in dudes Col (Drums) and Matt Harvey (Guitar). Spain kicked ass-point blank. Ditto on the peeps and gig. Madrid is a gorgeous city, but stay away from the blood sausage. Harv gorged himself on it then got hella-crazy food poisoning !!!

During the Tattoo The Mind Fest, you played as headliners, just after Destruction, and force is to recognize that a good part of the crowd had left after them. Only the curious ones and die-hard fans stayed for you. Were you prepared to this ? Matt : No matter to us. If it was just you, Snakepit Press, Malek and Philippe, we’d still had an excellent time.

I saw on your website that you were preparing a DVD. What will we see there and when do you think it will be released ? And will it be a tour in Europe to support this DVD ? Matt : The DVD is coming out sometime this year (2005). No tour is in the works. Thanks for asking !

Do you think the death of Dimebag Darrel on stage, shot by a fan, means that the USA are sick of their guns, or just sick ? Matt : It’s a deeply disturbing subject. What an utter waste. All I can say is I hope Darrel’s family can find peace with it someday.

And what do you think about this tragedy ? From here, it’s totally crazy, difficult to think that this sht happened… Matt : Yeah…it’s truly awful. There are no limits to a truly disturbed mind.

To end this interview, what can we wish to you for 2005 ? Matt : Nothing special. I just want to thank all of our supportive fans from the US and abroad.
