Nous venons d’en parler, votre tournée pour Unholy Cult fut assez longue, comment était-ce, spécialement en France?
Pour être honnête, la France fut l’un des meilleurs endroits où nous avons joué. Peu importe où nous jouions, la foule était très réceptive et intense. Pour preuve notre show à Paris sur le DVD !!! Mais toute la tournée pour Unholy Cult était folle, on a joué avec des supers groupes, des amis et on s’en est fait de nouveaux. Chaque tournée est une nouvelle expérience et nous attendons fortement à chaque fois la suivante.

Toutes les critiques pour Unholy Cult ont été unanimes, une vrai réussite !! Avez-vous ressenti une pression particulière pour la création de Harnessing Ruin ?
La pression pour nous, c’est le temps quand on enregistre. Habituellement, on planifie une date d’entrée dans le studio et commençons à écrire, et franchement on compose jusqu'à la dernière minute, donc pour nous, c’est une énorme pression. Nous ne comparons jamais ce que l’on écrit avec ce qui a déjà été fait, nous voulons juste faire la meilleure musique possible sur le moment.

Quel était votre but avant de commencer l’écriture du nouvel album ? Bien sûr, à part enregistrer un meilleur album ?
Notre but était de finir cet album ! Le processus d’écriture a été particulièrement intense car nous avons bossé jusqu’à la dernière minute. Ce fut dur pour notre nouveau batteur, Steve. Ross et moi sommes allés 3 week-ends de suite en Ohio et nous ne jouions avec Steve que pendant une seule journée à chaque fois. Mais le troisième week-end, nous sommes allés directement de l’Ohio vers le studio, donc ce fut chaud ! Il y a eu beaucoup de réécriture et de nouveaux arrangements des morceaux, ce qui a bien sûr compliqué la chose. Mais Steve a fait un super boulot et a même apporté sa propre touche dans le groupe. Son style est vraiment unique et très précis, ça correspond parfaitement à ce que l’on fait.

Peux-tu nous dire pourquoi Alex a quitté le groupe ?
Alex a eu de sérieux problèmes médicaux durant notre dernière tournée européenne. Quand nous sommes rentrés chez nous, avant de partir en tournée américaine, il a décidé qu’il n’était tout simplement plus intéressé pour continuer. C’est un super batteur, un des meilleurs ici, mais il n’a pas souhaité continuer avec le groupe. Il s’est marié récemment, il voulait donc s’installer, ce qui est bien en soit.

Votre nouveau batteur, Steve Shalaty, est très bon. Que peux-tu nous dire de lui ?
Steve vient de l’Ohio et d’un groupe qui s’appelle Odious Sanction. On l’a trouvé grâce à un ami, Brian Woody, quand on recherchait un batteur avant notre tournée américaine. Steve a appris 9 chansons en 3 jours et l’a fait les doigts dans le nez. Il a même appris deux nouvelles chansons pendant la tournée. Il nous a beaucoup apporté, le mélange entre son style et notre musique est super. Steve a une grande compétence de synchronisation pour les morceaux et de plus une extrême habilité pour jouer de la batterie, nous sommes heureux de l’avoir dans le groupe, il aide le groupe à atteindre un autre niveau.

Nous le savons, vous adorez travailler avec le producteur Paul Dorofino qui vous donne ce son si particulier. Mais ne pensez-vous pas qu’il aurait été intéressant, pour une fois, d’en changer, de tester autre chose. D’autant plus que certains tendent à dire que la production a toujours été l’élément faible d’Immolation ?
Tout le monde est toujours très critique avec nous pour quelque raison que ce soit, mais c’est bien. On aime travailler avec Paul, c’est un super producteur et un bon ami. Il tire le meilleur de nous-mêmes et a en plus une super oreille, nous aidant d’ailleurs à faire sonner au mieux toutes nos dissonances pour que le tout ne ressemble pas à un gros bordel. Nous l’apprécions pour ses conseils, pour le regard qu’il porte sur ce qu’on fait, qu’il aime d’ailleurs, nous respectons son opinion. Paul a travaillé avec certains des meilleurs musiciens, de Blue Oyster Cult à John Hammond. Son expérience est large et sa personnalité rend la chose très confortable et appréciable à chaque moment. Paul donne à notre musique un son unique et la production s’améliore d’album en album. Harnessing Ruin a un son massif, très gros et complet, plus grand que la vie et très clair à l’écoute. Nous sommes heureux qu’il fasse partie de notre team, nous enregistrerons notre prochain album avec lui, c’est sûr.

Le nouvel album est une nouvelle fois magistral, les chansons sont noires et puissantes à souhait ! Quel est votre secret ? (NDPA : j’en fais trop là ??? – NdWil : ben, comme d’hab ! lol…)
Cela à peut-être à voir avec le fait que l’on ne joue pas tout le temps. Donc, quand le moment est venu, nous sommes frais, aucunement fatigués de jouer. Nous sommes surexcités pour chaque album. Nous savons aussi ce que nous voulons faire, nous connaissons notre direction. Nous voulons juste créer quelque chose d’intense et de puissant avec une bonne dose de feeling. C’est notre but et c’est ce que nous faisons et adorons faire.

Y a-t-il un thème particulier dans l’album?
L’album ressemble à ce qui se passe dans le monde aujourd’hui, les batailles entre pays, nations, mais aussi sur ce qui nous arrive plus personnellement. Concernant la guerre ? Nous exorcisons nos démons, l’album montre à quel point les choses sont incontrôlables et peu importe ce que nous essayons de faire pour les contrôler, tout glisse entre nos doigts.

L’artwork, excellent au demeurant, est l’œuvre de Sven (chanteur d’Aborted), expliquez-nous votre choix ?
Nous devions demander à Andreas Marschall de réaliser l’artwork, mais nous avons décidé d’essayer autre chose finalement. Nous étions également intéressés par Travis Smith car son travail est très noir, mais finalement le choix s’est posé sur Sven. Il est très bon dans le design par ordinateur. Nous lui avions donné la trame principale, et peu de temps après, quelques dessins en ébauche plus tard, nous avions fait notre choix définitif. Nous étions tellement contents de ce qu’il avait fait, qu’il a fait 10 dessins de plus pour le packaging de l’album, et se révèle être ce qu’on a eu de meilleur jusqu'à présent. Sven est très bon et nous avons énormément apprécié ses efforts.

Autre sujet, quel est votre point de vue sur la réélection de Bush?
J’ai toujours tendance à voir le meilleur en chacun. Beaucoup de choses se passent dans ce monde et heureusement nous arrivons à les gérer. (NdPA : Pro-Bush Immolation ??? Il semblerait... Bof, tant pis, c’est trop bon comme groupe !!! NdW : pas de politique ici, PA, voyons ! lol…)

Y a-t-il réellement un syndrome anti-français aux Etats-Unis?
Oui c’est vrai, ah ah !! Cela vient de votre position concernant la guerre récente. Ca s’étouffe un peu dorénavant, et je ne pense pas que ce soit détestable, c’est juste un problème politique. Pour nous personnellement, franchement, nous avons de nombreux amis en France et à travers le monde, c’est tout ce qui nous importe.

Un mot pour vos fans français justement?
Nous voulons les remercier pour leur grand soutien et nous sommes impatients de revenir vous voir. Nous devrions faire quelques shows en Juin, donc surveillez les dates !

How does it feel to have finally your DVD out now ?
I guess it feels ok,..it doesn’t seem like it’s out yet to us, as its not yet available in the US. We hope it is out by the time the new CD is available. It’s a great DVD though, our first so it’s very cool for us. It has a lot of interesting stuff on there, different shows from our last US and Euro tours, some behind the scenes stuff etc. From the main show in Amsterdam on our Cradle Of Filth Tour to a show in LA with our new drummer Steve, it has a lot of different perspectives on our live performances.

You’ve made a huge tour to promote the unholy cult album, how was it, especially in France ?
France was actually one of the best responses to be honest with you. No matter where we play in France the crowds are extremely receptive and really intense! You can see proof of this from our Paris show on the DVD!!! The entire touring for Unholy Cult was amazing, we got to play with some awesome bands and friends, and made a lot of new ones too. Each tour is a new experience and we look forward to it each time.

All the reviews for Unholy Cult agreed to say that this was a huge album. Did you feel any kind of pressure before recording your new album, Harnessing Ruin ?
The only pressure we feel is the time factor when we go to record. We usually set a date for the studio and start writing and end up writing frantically until the last moment, so for us this is the heavy pressure. As far as comparing new material to the old, we never look back, we just aim to make the best music we can at this moment.

What was your goal before beginning all the writing process? I mean, except the fact of making a better album?
Our goal is to get it complete for one ! This last record was exceptionally intense in the writing process as we really pushed it to the last minute. This made it a bit tough on Steve, our new drummer. Me and Ross drove out to Ohio 3 weekends in a row and rehearsed with Steve for 1 day each time. By the third weekend we went straight from Ohio into the studio, so it was rough. There was a lot of re-writing and re-arranging in the process which complicated matters. But Steve did an amazing job and even brought his own elements into the band. His style is very unique and very smooth, and fits into our style perfectly.

Can you tell us why Alex left the band?
Alex had some medical issues on the last Euro tour we did. Then when he got home, before we went on our US run, he decided he was not interested in doing this anymore. He is a great drummer, one of the best out there, but he did not want to continue with the band. He got married recently, so he just wanted to settle down, which is fine.

Your new drummer, Steve Shalaty, is very good. What can you tell us about him?
Steve is in an Ohio based band Odious Sanction. We found him through a friend, Brian Woody, when we were looking for a replacement for our last US tour. Steve had to learn 9 songs in 3 days and pulled it off without a hitch! He went on to learn 2 more songs during the tour. Between picking up our style and adding his own flare into it, he really has added a lot to the band. Steve has great timing skill and exceptional ability and we are glad to have him in the band, he helps bring the band to a new level.

I know that you like to work with the producer Paul Dorofino. But don?t you feel that it would have been a good idea to change producer because some agree to say that you can really have a better sound?
For me, I think that this particular sound reveals a very dark and unearthly side, which is great, but some agree to say that it’s impossible to hear the drums and that the guitars can sound better. Everyone is always very critical of us for some reason, but that’s ok. We like working with Paul, he is a great producer and a good friend. He brings out the best in us and really has a good ear, helping our multitude of dissonance not sound like a big mess! Haha ! We look to him for his advice and his approval on a lot of what we do, as we respect his opinion. Paul has worked with some of the most talented musicians, from Blue Oyster Cult to John Hammond. His experience is endless and his personality makes the whole experience very comfortable and enjoyable each time. Paul gives our unique music a very unique sound and the productions get better and better with every release. Harnessing Ruin has a massive sound, very big and full, larger than life yet very clear and tight. We are very glad to have him as part of the team and we will definitely do our next record with Paul as well.

The songs of this album are once again very good, dark, and full of huge riffs. What is your secret?
It might have something to do with the fact that we don’t play all the time, ?then when it comes time to get it done we are fresh, we are not tired of playing. We get excited with every new album. We also know what we want to do, we have a direction. We just want to create new intense and powerful music with lots of feeling. That’s our goal and that’s what we do, and we really enjoy it.

Is there a particular theme in the album ?
The album looks at what is going in the world today, the struggles between country, nation, world and also on a personal level. From the war ? To your own inner demons, the album looks at how uncontrollable things are in life and how no matter how hard we try to hold on to it all, it’s just slipping through our fingers.

The artwork (excellent by the way) is made by Sven of Aborted. Can you explain us this choice ?
We obviously were going to ask Andreas Marschall, but we had some ideas that persuaded us to try a different route this time. We also were interested in Travis Smith as his work is very dark, but in the end Sven was the man. He is extremely skilful in the digital designing. We gave him the ideas and he pretty much nailed it after a couple of roughs. We were so happy with what he was doing that he ended up doing 10 more pieces for the packaging, and it turned out to be the best we’ve ever had. Sven really kicked some artistic ass on this one and we really appreciate his efforts.

Other subject, what is your point of view about the re-election of Georges w. Bush?
I tend to look at all view points and the best in people. There is a lot going on in this world now and hopefully we can all pull it together.

Is it real that in America, there is an anti-French syndrome?
Yes there is, haha ! This mainly stemmed from France’s stance during the recent war. It has died down a bit now, and I don’t think most of it is truly hateful, just more of a political tongue and cheek thing. For us personally, when it comes to the people, we have lots of friends in France and all over the world, so that’s what matters to us most.
