Merci et le meilleur pour toi et tous tes lecteurs ! Nous sommes très excités par cette année qui s’annonce !
Bon, alors, avant de commencer à parler de vos projets de 2007, j’aimerais que nous revenions un peu sur le passé récent du groupe… Comment a été finalement reçu Harnessing Ruin ?
Heureusement bien ! Pour ce que l’on peut en dire, il fut très bien reçu dans la presse et les chansons de l’album ont très bien fonctionné en live quand nous les avons jouées, ce qui est un bon indicateur en général pour juger. Nous n’avons pas pu tourner tant que ça pour l’album à cause de nos boulots respectifs mais nous avons pu quand même tourner avec Deicide lors de l’été 2005 aux USA, à la suite de quoi nous avons fait quelques petites tournées de quelques jours ça et là. En ce qui concerne l’Europe, nous nous sommes contentés de quelques festivals comme le Graspop, le Fury Fest et le Arnhem Metal Fest très récemment, qui furent tous phénoménaux pour nous en ce qui concerne la réponse du public et le nombre de personnes devant qui nous avons joué. Mais malheureusement, nous n’avons pas pu faire une vraie tournée chez vous pour parcourir tous les pays où nous aurions aimé aller…

Quelle fut aussi la réponse pour le DVD ?
Nous espérons que les gens l’ont aimé. Notre seule complainte vis-à-vis de ce DVD est qu’il n’a jamais véritablement été distribué chez nous pour qu’on puisse le lire avec notre système de zone, et je pense que ça a bien cassé le délire pour ce DVD. Je pense que c’est une honte parce que c’est un putain de DVD et Listenable a vraiment mis beaucoup d’effort et de temps là-dedans pour que ce soit un truc qui ressemble à quelque chose. Il présente pas mal de matériel, des backstages, et c’est quelque chose dont nous sommes fiers.

Qu’avez-vous fait depuis la sortie d’Harnessing Ruin ?
A part les quelques shows que je t’ai mentionnés, pas grand chose, à part vivre notre vie de tous les jours, le boulot, la famille, ce genre de trucs… Une fois que nous en avons eu fini avec les concerts pour Harnessing Ruin, nous avons décidé de nous y mettre pour le nouvel album, ce qui nous amène directement au présent !!

J’ai vu que vous aviez tout terminé pour l’album en ce début janvier. Comment se sont donc passés les processus de composition et d’enregistrement cette fois ?
Probablement pour la première fois depuis longtemps, nous étions véritablement bien préparés avant d’enregistrer. Bob avait sur lui 3 cassettes de 60 minutes pleines de riffs de malade qu’il avait enregistrées chez lui 2 mois avant qu’on n’entre en studio, donc, ça nous a donné de solides fondations pour mettre en place les titres. Le processus s’est déroulé très calmement en fait, sans aucun stress. Nous avons vraiment pris notre temps avec Steve pour être sur que nous tenions les bons tempos et les bonnes atmosphères et nous avons même eu le temps de composer un instrumental de 7 minutes, ce qui est une première pour nous. L’enregistrement en lui-même s’est très bien passé, nous étions vraiment bien, ce fut une expérience très plaisante et je peux te dire que nous pouvons être fiers et contents du résultat.

Vous avez donc gardé le même batteur cette fois !
Oh oui, et Steve est le batteur attitré d’Immolation et le restera aussi longtemps qu’il le désirera !!! Steve a fait ses preuves en tant que musicien et personne quand il nous a rejoint aux USA sur le Unholy Cult Tour quand notre ancien batteur, Alex, n’avait pas pu faire la tournée pour des raisons personnelles. Steve a aussi fait un travail phénoménal sur Harnessing Ruin, est incroyable en situation live et il nous a encore plus mis la claque sur le nouvel album, dépassant de loin ce que nous pouvions espérer !

J’ai aussi vu que vous aviez filmé une vidéo à Paris en décembre… Tu peux nous en dire plus ?
La vidéo est pour le titre “World Agony”, qui apparaîtra sur l’album, et elle a été filmée dans une carrière souterraine en décembre. Ca a bien fonctionné et nous en sommes actuellement à finaliser le montage. Nous en sommes très contents et nous pensons que cette chanson est le choix parfait parce que c’est une chanson très heavy et agressive, avec des parties musicales qui montre tous les points forts d’Immolation.

Si j’ai bien tout suivi, vous allez sortir un EP un mois avant la sortie de l’album complet. C’est assez étrange comme idée ! Pourquoi cela et quelles seront les différences entre les deux disques ? Peux-tu nous révéler les titres et quelques détails?
Le EP est quelque chose que nous avons toujours voulu faire et là, la chance s’est présentée donc nous avons sauté dessus. Il contiendra 3 chansons qui ne seront pas sur l’album ainsi qu’un DVD Bonus filmé à New York, en live, en avril 2006. Le titre du EP est “Hope and Horror” et les trois titres sont “Den of Thieves”, “The Condemned” et “The Struggle of Hope and Horror”, ce dernier étant l’instrumental dont je t’ai parlé tout à l’heure… Le EP sera spécial parce qu’il contient vraiment tout ce qui fait d’Immolation un truc unique, certaines de nos parties les plus rapides jamais composées, les plus torturées et les plus sombres.
L’album contiendra quant à lui 10 titres : “Hate’s Plague”, “Passion Kill”, “World Agony”, “Tarnished”, “The Weight of Devotion”, “Breathing the Dark”, “Deliverer of Evil”, “Shadows in the Light”, “Lying with Demons” et “Whispering Death”. Définitivement notre album le plus fort à ce jour, le plus intense, le plus lourd, le plus sombre, avec des tonnes de terribles soli et des parties de batterie de dingue. Il combine les côtés sombres et effayants des 2 premiers albums avec l’intensité de Close To A World Below et Unholy Cult. Nous sommes vraiment contents du résultat final et nous pensons que beaucoup seront surpris en l’écoutant.

Que peut-on espérer dans ce cas, avec ces deux sorties ? Du pur Immolation ou y aura-t-il des évolutions majeures ?
Je pense que c’est du pur Immolation, pur et simple. C’est vraiment ça et les gens vont se rendre compte que nous sommes de retour avec quelque chose de gros quand ils écouteront les premières secondes du premier titre. C’est vraiment un album intense et il va certainement mettre pas mal de monde sur le cul.

A propos du packaging de l’album, à quoi doit-on s’attendre ?
De tout ce que nous avons pu voir de l’artwork de l’album, ça pète !!! Ca correspond tout à fait avec les vibrations et les sentiments générés par la musique et ça rentre totalement dans le style d’Immolation. C’est Sven d’Aborted qui s’est une nouvelle fois chargé de la pochette et de l’intérieur du livret pour nous, et il a encore fait un boulot phénoménal !

Listenable Records est le label de notre pote Laurent, ici chez Noiseweb… Il est vraiment apprécié pour son excellent travail depuis tant d’années… Comment juges-tu votre collaboration avec lui ?
Avant toute chose, Laurent est notre pote depuis plus de 20 ans… C’est une grande personne avec un grand cœur et il est vraiment passionné par la musique. Je le savais avant même que Listenable Records n’existe. Son cœur est pour la musique, faisant tout pour faire grossir les groupes qu’il travaille et faire connaître au plus grand nombre possible de gens leurs albums. C’est tout ce qu’il y a à dire de lui. C’est vraiment un plaisir que de bosser avec lui et d’être sur son label !!!

Comment s’est passé ce show spécial à Arnhem, en décembre ? Je devais y aller mais malheureusement, un empêchement m’a retenu à Lille. J’étais bien dég’, d’ailleurs. Alors ?
C’était super ! Nous avons passé un très bon moment, le show était super, c’était organisé de manière très professionnelle, nous avons été très bien traités et le public fut phénoménal. Nous ne pouvions en demander plus !

Will Of Death - Ross & Bob - Chris from Scarvenger

Avec qui et quand allez-vous finalement tourner au printemps en Europe ? Je vous ai vus au Graspop il y a deux ans et franchement, pour ouvrir le festival, on ne pouvait rêver mieux ! C’était la claque totale (cette photo, là, a été tirée à la fin de ce show)… Vivement que vous soyez de retour, man !
Ouais, ce show fut terrible et je me souviens bien de toi sur cette photo ! La tournée européenne démarre le 4 mai et se termine le 10 juin. Nous serons accompagnés de nos bons potes de Krisiun, de Grave et Dawn Of Azazel de Nouvelle-Zélande fera partie du truc. C’est parti pour être une putain de tournée avec 4 excellents groupes assez différents. Nous n’en pouvons plus d’attendre ça !!!

Interview with Ross Dolan (bass, vocals), by Will Of Death

Hailz man ! Will here from Noiseweb magazine – France… First of all, happy new year to you all, from Noiseweb ! Best wishes for 2007 !
Thank you and all the best to you and all your readers!!!!! We are very excited for the New Year!!!!

So, to begin, before speaking of your projects for 2007, I would like that you made a feedback on the 2 last years… How was finally received Harnessing Ruin ?
Hopefully it was received well. From what we can tell it was received really well in the press and the songs off of “Harnessing Ruin” went over really well when we played them live, so that is basically a good way to judge. We didn’t do that much touring for the record due to our work situations, but we did manage to hit the US with Deicide in summer 2005, then we did a lot of short runs here and there after that. As for Europe, all we really did was the Graspop, Fury Fest and the Arnhem Metal Fest which were all phenomenal for us as far as the size and enthusiasm of the crowds. But unfortunately we didn’t really have the opportunity to do a proper tour and hit all the countries we would have liked to hit.

What was the response for the DVD ?
We hope people liked it. Our only complaint with the DVD was that it was never properly released here in the US on our system, so I think that really hurt the momentum of the release. It was a shame because we thought it was a killer release and Listenable put a great deal of time and effort into it and it looked great. It really offered a lot as far as material and behind the scenes stuff, so overall it was something we were very proud of.

What did you do since the release of Harnessing Ruin ?
Aside from the shows I mentioned earlier, not too much other than our normal daily lives, the usual work and family stuff. Once the touring cycle was done for the Harnessing Ruin album, we decided to start planning out the next release, which brings us up to the present!!!!

We saw that you were finishing the new album… How were the processes of composition and recordings ?
Probably for the first time in a long time, we were very well prepared before going into record this album. Bob had about 3 sixty minute cassette tapes full of killer riffs that he had been recording for about two months before we actually went into the studio, so this gave us a great foundation on which to build the songs. The process actually went very smoothly and surprisingly stress free. We had plenty of time to fine tune all the songs with Steve to make sure everything felt right as far as tempos and moods, and we even had time to squeeze in a 7 minute instrumental that was a first for us. The recording itself was great, we didn’t fall behind at all and again, there was no stress, it was a very pleasant experience from beginning to end, and the end result is something that we are all really happy and proud of.

You change once again your drummer or not ?
No, Steve Shalaty is Immolation’s drummer and will be for as long as he wants!!!!! Steve proved himself as a musician and a person when he stepped in to play for us on our US tour back on the Unholy Cult album when our old drummer Alex couldn’t do the tour for personal reasons. He did a phenomenal job on the Harnessing Ruin album, is unbelievable in the live arena, and he really blew us away on the new record, going beyond what we even expected!!!

I saw that you also filmed a new video in Paris in December… Can you tell us more about this ?
The video was for the song “World Agony” which will appear on the full length, and it was filmed in an underground quarry in Paris back in December. It really turned out great, although we still have to put the finishing touches on it. We are happy with it so far, and we feel the song was a perfect choice because it is a very heavy and aggressive song with some musical parts that showcase all the strong points of Immolation.

If I’m right, I also red that you will release an EP one month before the official release of the new album… It’s a kind of strange thing ! Can you explain why and what differences will there be between the 2 releases ? Can you give us too the titles and some details about the songs ?
The EP is something that we always wanted to do, and now we finally had the chance so we jumped on it. The EP will contain three songs that will not be on the album, as well as a bonus live DVD filmed here in New York back in April. The EP is entitled “Hope and Horror” and the three songs are “Den of Thieves”, “The Condemned” and “The Struggle of Hope and Horror”, this last one being the instrumental. The EP will really be special because it has every element of what makes the band unique, some of our fastest, most twisted and darkest musical pieces.
The album will contain 10 songs and will be entitled “Shadows in the Light” and the track listing is as follows: “Hate’s Plague”, “Passion Kill”, “World Agony”, “Tarnished”, “The Weight of Devotion”, “Breathing the Dark”, “Deliverer of Evil”, “Shadows in the Light”, “Lying with Demons” and “Whispering Death”. Definitely our strongest record to date, our most intense, fastest, heaviest, darkest, with tons a great guitar leads and killer drum work. It combines those dark and creepy elements of the first two records with the intensity of Close to a World Below and Unholy Cult. We are really happy with the end result and think everyone will be surprised when they hear it.

What can we expect from these 2 releases ? Some pure Immolation or will there be some main evolutions ?
I think this is pure Immolation, pure and simple. It’s all there, and people will know we are back in a big way as soon as they hear the first few seconds of the first song. This is really an intense album and it’s going to blow a lot of people away.

About the packaging of the new album, what can we expect ?
All we have seen so far is the artwork, and it is great!!!! Totally fits the vibe and feel of the music and fits in with the Immolation style. Sven from Aborted is once again handling the art and layout for us, and so far he is doing a phenomenal job as always.

Listenable Records is our friend’s one, Laurent, here in Noiseweb… He is very appreciated for his good job since so many years… How do you judge your collaboration with him ?
First and foremost, Laurent is our friend for almost 20 years. He is a great person with a great heart and he is truly passionate about music. I knew this way before Listenable ever existed. His heart is into the music and making his bands grow and spreading their music to as many people as possible. That is what it’s all about to him. It is truly a pleasure to be working with him and to be on his label!!!!

How was the show in Arnhem, in Netherlands, in December ? I was supposed to go there but unfortunately, I had to stay at home… So ?
It was great!!! We had great fun, the show was great, it was organized very professionally, we were treated very well, and the crowd was phenomenal. We couldn’t have asked for anything more.

With who and when will you tour in Europe for the new album ? I saw you in the fuckin’ Graspop in 2005, and it was absolutely killer [you can see the pic with you after the show after the interview… ;-)] !!! Can’t wait to see ya again here, man !
Yes, this show was awesome and I remember you very well on this pic ! The European tour starts on May 4th and finishes up June 10th. Joining us on the tour will be our good friends from Krisiun, Grave and Dawn of Azazel from New Zealand, so it’s going to be an unbelievable tour with 4 very killer but different bands. We can’t wait!!!!!
