REVENGIA
Revengia est un groupe de heavy-thrash suédois des plus couillus, qui nous a bien surpris avec Eraser, son 2ème méfait qui bénéficie enfin d’une sortie internationale chez Thundering Records, alors que cet album a été enregistré en 2007 avec un certain Daniel Erlandsson à la batterie (Arch Enemy, Carcass). Nous avons contacté le fondateur du groupe, Matti, afin d’en savoir un peu plus et mieux vous faire connaître cette excellente formation.

Merci à toi ! J’ai passé la chronique au traducteur, j’ai donc une bonne idée de ce que tu as écrit.

Ça doit être un peu étrange pour toi de promouvoir internationalement à nouveau un album qui est en fait sorti en 2007, avec des titres enregistrés en 2005, non ?
En fait, ça vient juste de sortir également en Suède. Cet album n’était sorti jusque là qu’au Japon, via Soundholic, en novembre 2007, et nulle part ailleurs. L’album n’a été complété qu’en août 2007. Vous pourriez penser que c’est maladroit de dire ça mais hormis au Japon, cet album est nouveau pour tout le monde et nous en sommes fiers. Du coup, c’est cool de pouvoir enfin en faire la promotion. Maintenant, nous aimerions pouvoir partir sur les routes pour le defendre !

Pourquoi a-t-il été si compliqué pour vous de trouver un deal international alors que votre album est bon ?
Je ne te le fais pas dire  !! On a bossé plus de deux ans pour que cet album puisse sortir dignement. Il y a eu énormément d’intérêt pour cet album et le groupe puisque plus de 15 petits labels voulaient nous signer avant que Thundering ne se pointe. Le music business est dur de nos jours et nous avons dû payer la plupart des dépenses de production nous-mêmes donc nous devions trouver un label qui nous permette de gagner un peu d’argent sur les ventes futures et qui ait une bonne distribution.

Comment vois-tu cet album aujourd’hui ? Toujours conforme à ce qu’est le groupe aujourd’hui ?
Je le vois comme notre dernier CD. Nous avons foi à 100% en cet album et les titres sont forts. Tous les titres ont été écrits pour cet album, ce qui n’était pas le cas lors du premier CD. Eraser représente bien le chemin que nous suivons musicalement. Notre prochain album ne sera pas très différent d’Eraser, sauf que les titres seront encore meilleurs (rires) !

Revengia a été présenté comme le side-project de Daniel Erlandsson (Arch Enemy, Carcass) au départ alors que vous avez un autre batteur maintenant. Peut-on considérer Revengia comme un vrai groupe ?
C’est vrai qu’un buzz s’est créé autour du groupe grâce à la présence de Daniel mais c’est moi qui ai formé Revengia bien avant son arrivée. C’est mon bébé. Avant d’enregistrer le premier album, A Decade In The Dark, je n’avais pas de batteur et j’avais demandé un coup de main à Daniel car nous avions déjà joué ensemble dans Eucharist et The End. Il est un de mes proches amis et un des tous meilleurs batteurs du monde, voilà pourquoi je lui avais proposé le job, pas à cause de son nom. Quand nous avons commencé à bosser pour Eraser, avec Roger Berntsson, mon bassiste, il était naturel de proposer à Daniel de continuer avec nous. Une fois le disque fini, nous avons voulu jouer live mais Daniel a été de plus en plus occupé avec Arch Enemy et Carcass a pointé le bout de son nez. Il est devenu impossible de continuer pour lui et ce ne fut pas une surprise. Nous sommes contents qu’il ait pu jouer sur Eraser. Nous avons donc recruté Conny Pettersson, qui est très bon, et qui a su trouver sa place dans le groupe. Il va définitivement influencer aussi le groupe à l’avenir par son jeu.

Il y a eu plusieurs changements de line up depuis l’enregistrement de l’album, pourquoi ?
Pour Daniel, vous avez l’explication. Andreas, qui a assuré les vocaux, avait accepté de faire Eraser en tant que session musician. Pas de souci pour nous puisque c’est ce qu’était supposé être Eraser, un projet, au départ. Quand Revengia a changé de statut pour devenir un vrai groupe, il a essayé de continuer avec nous mais au bout de 6 mois, il s’est rendu compte qu’il ne pouvait pas se consacrer à 100% au groupe du fait de ses activités non-musicales. Pas de souci pour nous non plus car Andreas et Daniel sont des mecs cool. Nous avons alors commencé à répéter, j’ai pris le chant mais nous avons vite senti qu’il nous fallait un deuxième guitariste rythmique, c’est là que nous avons recruté Johan Persson, qui est avec nous depuis 18 mois maintenant. Nous avons différentes manières de jouer mais nous nous complétons très bien. 

Cet album est très agressif, bien qu’on ne parle pas là de swedish death-thrash. Comment décrirais-tu votre musique ?
Du heavy-metal traditionnel tel qu’il doit sonner aujourd’hui. C’est du Metal dur mais nous incorporons beaucoup de mélodie dans les lignes vocales. Pour nous, il est important d’avoir des mélodies vocales, même si celles-ci sont agressives. Il y a beaucoup de groupes qui jouent une musique semblable à la nôtre mais comme ils incorporent des growls, on appelle ça du (melodic) death-metal. J’aime les growls mais nous avons choisi un chemin plus mélodique avec Revengia bien que quelques voix death « parfument » certains titres. Au bout du compte, le plus important est que les gens apprécient notre musique plutôt que le genre dans lequel on évolue ou pas…

Le son de cet album est très bon. Te rappelles-tu comment vous avez procédé ?
Déjà, merci. Nous avons enregistré les bases des titres avec mon studio mobile ZerOonE, dans différents endroits, ici à Varberg. Ensuite, nous avons enregistré les vocaux de la même manière bien qu’Andreas ait fait quelques sessions à Göteborg. Ensuite, j’ai commencé à mixer l’album en me rendant compte qu’en fait, 90% des choses que j’écoutais avaient été mixées par Fredrik Nordström. Je l’ai alors contacté pour finir le mix. Ça s’est très bien passé bien que j’ai dû retourner là-bas un peu plus tard, une journée, pour quelques ajustements de niveaux. La production a pris beaucoup trop de temps au final, nous ferons plus vite la fois prochaine.

On peut sentir des influences typiquement suédoises sur cet album (je pense au refrain du titre « Holy Lies » par exemple) mais il semble que vous soyez plus influencés par la scène thrash américaine. Tu es d’accord ?
Nous sommes suédois, il est donc normal de retrouver certains influences de notre pays sur cet album. Nous avons la même tradition au niveau des mélodies mais c’est tout. Je suis donc assez d’accord avec toi quand tu parles des USA car quand nous avons commencé ce groupe, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer ou Testament faisaient partie de nos influences. Il n’est donc pas étonnant que ça ressorte d’une manière ou d’une autre dans notre musique. 

Quel est le statut du groupe en Suède ?
Assez bas. Maintenant que l’album sort chez nous, nous allons pouvoir le promouvoir. Nous sommes ouverts à toute proposition. Avec un peu de chance, nous allons pouvoir faire connaître le groupe et nous faire une place.

Quel est le futur là, qu’attendez-vous de la sortie de cet album ?
Nous sommes en train d’écrire le nouvel album et nous avons 5 ou 6 chansons déjà complètement terminées. C’est la continuité d’Eraser, du Metal solide avec des refrains forts et beaucoup de variété dans les chansons. Notre but est de jouer le plus possible pour promouvoir l’album et nous espérons récolter de bonnes chroniques afin que plus de gens encore aient envie de l’écouter et qu’ils l’apprécient.

Un dernier mot pour les fans français ?

Thank’s! Really a great review, I ran I through Babelfish so I got a brief idea what it was about.

I think it can be quite strange for you to do again the promotion of an album which was released in Sweden in 2007, composed before 2005, no?
Actually it was just released in Sweden and Europe. It was released by Soundholic in Japan only in November of 2007, but nowhere else.  The record was not completed before august 2007. You could think it would be awkward, but this record is new for everybody (except Japan) and we are proud of the record so it actually feels great to promote it now. Now we would like to do some shows and promote it as well!

Why was it so hard for you to find an international deal, whereas your album is very good?
You tell me!!!  We have worked for over 2 years to get the record released. There was a lot of interest in the record and the band. Probably been dealing with 15 small companies before signing to Thundering. The record business is very hard today, you have to pay most of the expenses for the record yourself so we tried to find a deal where we actually could get back some of the money spent if any records are sold.

How do you see this album now? Always conform to what you play now?
I see it as our latest CD. We believe in the record 100% and the songs are strong. All of the tracks are newly written, which was not the case with the first CD. ERASER represent very well the path were are following musically. The follow-up will not differ that much from ERASER, but you must always strive for even better songs!

Revengia was introduced here in being a side-project of Daniel Erlandsson. But now, your drummer has changed. What was the problem with Daniel, a lack of time to be with you for example? And was Revengia a side-project at the beginning or a real band?
Yeah, we got most of the attention in the beginning because of Daniel. But this band has been my baby long back before Daniel joined. So when I got some songs from the past collected to record for the first CD (A DECADE IN THE DARK) and asked Daniel if he would like to play on it. We go back to playing together in EUCHARIST and THE END (SWE). He’s one of my close friends and also one of the top drummers in the world so that the reason for asking him, not because he has a name. So yes, it was intended to be one record first. But then me and old bass player Roger Berntsson, started to write new songs and it was natural to ask Daniel again for ERASER. After completion we wanted to do gigs and promotion and Daniel got busier with Arch Enemy and also Carcass was coming around the corner, so it was no surprise that he couldn’t continue. We’re glad he could do ERASER with us.
Conny Pettersson who has replaced Daniel is amazing and has taken his own place in the band. He will definitely influence the bands sound with his drumming.

There were several changes of line up since the release of this album. Why?
Well Daniel is already answered. As for Andreas who did the vocals, he agreed to do ERASER as a project. That was cool with us then because that was the status of ERASER at first. But when REVENGIA changed from project to band he wanted to try and continue with the band. But after 6 months he quit because he was not that into the music and felt that he could not contribute to the band because of that. So were cool with that as well. Both Daniel and Andreas are cool guys.
Then when starting rehearsing we felt that we needed one more guitar so we recruited Johan Persson and he’s been in the band for 18 months now. We have different ways of playing so we got a nice mix going there.

This album is very aggressive, even it’s not death-metal. How could you describe the music in it?
Traditional Heavy metal as it sounds today. It is hard metal but we got the melody lines in the vocals. For us it’s important to have vocal melodies although they are singed with an edge. There are many bands playing same kind of music as we, but they got growl and call their music (melodic) death metal. I like growl myself but we chose the path of melody with REVENGIA although elements of growl exist. In the end of the day the most important thing is that people like our music instead of the genre.

The sound of this album is also very good! Do you remember how were the recording and mixing sessions?
Thanks! We recorded the basic tracks with my mobile studio ZerOonE on different locations here in Varberg. Then we recorded the vocals the same way but also Andreas made some recordings in Gothenburg. Then I started to mix the record but discovered that I was listening to Fredrik Nordströms productions as a reference for 90% of the time, so finally I contacted him and Studio Fredman to mix it. That went nice and easy, although we went back one day for adjustments of some levels. The whole production took way too long time, so next time we will do it faster.

We can feel a Swedish feeling in this album (I think about the chorus of the track “Holy Lies” for example), but it seems that you were more influenced by the American thrash-metal scene. Do you agree?
Well we are a Swedish band so it’s natural that we sound Swedish. We have the same tradition with melodies so it’s obvious. But I agree to your reference to the American thrash scene. When we started this band Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Testament were influential bands, so it would not be strange if you can hear one or two similarities with it.

What is the current status of the band in Sweden?
Pretty low, we have waited for ERASER to be released so we can start to promote it. It was just released so we’re available for shows now. Hopefully we can get some attention and build a name for the band.

What are your future plans now and what do you expect of this international release?
We are at the moment writing new material for the follow up to ERASER. We already got a handful of songs ready. It’s continuing what we started with ERASER, solid metal with lots of variety between songs and strong choruses. We will also try to get some shows to promote ERASER. Hopefully we get good reviews and people listen to the record and like it.
