Peux-tu présenter le groupe à nos lecteurs ?

Depuis combien de temps vous connaissez-vous et jouez-vous ensemble ?
Nous nous sommes formés en 2006 dans le Sussex, en Angleterre. Tom et Henry se connaissent depuis qu’ils sont ados et je les connais depuis 5 ans.

Enduring The Massacre est votre premier album, sorti en 2010, 2 ans après votre démo Annihilate To Liberate. Vous avez travaillé avec Chris Fielding au célèbre studio Foel au Pays de Galles. Ça vous a fait quoi de travailler là où des groupes comme Napalm Death ont déjà aussi mis les pieds ?
Nous étions très honorés d’enregistrer au même endroit que Napalm Death puisqu’ils sont un des nos groupes préférés. Tom a même enregistré l’album avec l‘ampli 5150 que Mitch Harris a utilisé sur leurs derniers albums.

Comment s’est passé l’enregistrement ?
Nous avons été super contents par la réalisation de l’album. Etre au studio Foel a vraiment apporté un son plus organique que ce que nous avions prévu, ce qui est excellent. Chris nous a rendu la tâche très facile, il a travaillé très dur pour être sûr que nous serions 100% satisfaits pendant la création de l’album, et il était vraiment sur la même longueur d’onde que nous !

L’artwork de l’album est très symbolique et très bien fait, dis-nous en plus.
Colin Marks avait la même vision que nous pour le design de la couverture. A la base, nous avions choisi cette idée pour qu’elle colle aux paroles d’Enduring The Massacre, qui parle de la destruction de la planète par l’humanité, ce qui affecte le dieu grec Atlas « le porteur », qui ne peut plus supporter le poids d’un monde qui meurt.


La syntaxe et vos textes sont assez complexes pour un non-angliciste, peux-tu nous dire de quoi ils parlent ? Qui écrit les textes ?
Henry et moi écrivons les textes, ils ont toujours parlé du côté sombre de l’humanité et du monde, car c’est ce que nous vivons tous les jours. Il y a beaucoup de références anciennes et bibliques, et il y a aussi des morceaux qui parlent de l’histoire moderne, comme par exemple « The Vitruvian Plan » qui est un morceau qui traite des atrocités du profilage racial pendant l’Allemagne Nazie, qui s’accrochait à conserver le concept de « l’anatomie parfaite » de l’homme Vitruve.

Je vous ai vus en France, au Nautilys de Comines, dans le nord de la France, et le set était monstrueux, il y a avait peu de gens car vous avez joué les premiers mais tout le monde a adoré ! Vous êtes seulement trois sur scène mais vous « remplissez » vraiment l’espace ; comment expliques-tu cette maturité ?
Merci ! Pour être franc, je ne sais pas -Henry et Tom jouent tous les deux et chantent en même temps donc ils ne peuvent pas bouger comme ils le voudraient - ceci étant dit, nous sommes des mecs assez larges/balaises donc ça aide!

C’était votre première expérience sur scène à l’étranger ? Ça vous a fait quoi de faire le tour de l’Europe dans un grand tour bus ?
C’était la première fois qu’on jouait ailleurs qu’au Royaume-Uni et on ne pouvait pas rêver mieux. Le bus a rendu l’expérience très agréable, et tous les mecs des autres groupes et le crew étaient les gars les plus sympas avec lesquels trainer et tourner pendant un mois. Le public a été génial aussi, les shows Français (Comines, Nantes, Luynes) ont vraiment été parmi nos préférés. J’espère que nos prochaines tournées nous feront revenir ici !

Le groupe m’a tout de suite fait penser à Dying Fetus, parle-nous de vos influences. Pour Tom : quand a-t-il réalisé qu’il avait cette grosse voix puissante ;-) ?
Nous sommes très influencés par la scène Death Metal américaine, surtout par Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Skinless et Origin. Les gens disent souvent qu’ils remarquent aussi de l’old school dans notre musique et je crois que ça vient d’influences comme Deicide et Cannibal Corpse, et aussi de groupes qui nous ont fait découvrir des trucs plus heavy comme Black Sabbath, Slayer et Iron Maiden. A la base, Henry faisait tous les chants mais quand Tom a commencé à apporter son style de chant plus guttural, nous avons trouvé que les deux allaient bien ensemble, alors ils ont fini par se partager le travail !


Il y a tellement de groupes de Death Metal ! Tu trouves que c’est dur de s’imposer sur une scène déjà assez « occupée » ?
C’est assez difficile de se faire remarquer, surtout en ce moment dans une scène qui semble beaucoup s‘occuper de mode et du nombre d’amis qu’ils ont sur leur Myspace ou trucs du genre. Il y a tellement de politique dans le Death Metal maintenant et nous n’en avons rien à cirer. Nous sommes là pour jouer de la musique heavy et passer du bon temps ! J’aime penser que nous pouvons toucher des fans de Metal actuel et aussi old school, et puis au Royaume-Uni, il n’y a pas beaucoup de groupes qui jouent du Death Metal à « l’américaine », donc j’espère que nous nous démarquons un petit peu en jouant notre style.

Vous avez un nouvel album en cours de création, peux-tu nous en dire plus ?
Il nous reste quelques morceaux à écrire et l’album sera prêt. Nous pensons l’enregistrer au milieu de l’année prochaine. Cette album sonne aussi brutal qu’Enduring The Massacre, et il y a plus de groove dans la musique, il y a aussi plus de variations dans l’album. « Judecca » a été le dernier morceau qu’on ait composé pour Enduring The Massacre et les nouveaux morceaux sonnent comme une progression naturelle de celui-ci. Les paroles sont composées de la même manière par Henry et moi, nous aurons plus de nouvelles sur l’enregistrement dans les prochains mois !

Quels sont vos projets de tournée ? Est-ce que des « gros » groupes font déjà appel à vous ?
Nous nous sommes fait de bons amis durant cette année ici et à l’étranger, nous avons un gros projet de tournée pour l’année 2011. Sans citer de noms pour l’instant, nous allons jouer au Royaume-Uni très bientôt en 2011, et une tournée internationale et des festivals vont suivre. Suivez les news !

Dyscarnate is a young English Death Metal band that I had the pleasure to discover this September in the North of France, in Comines, during the “Initiation Of The Mislead Tour” which gathered Cephalic Carnage, Psycroptic, Ion Dissonance and Hour Of Penance. And I must say that everyone in the venue was bluffed by their brutal performance and their heavy and powerful sound! I had to share this discovery with you…


First can you introduce the band to our readers please (members, function in the band, city)?
Guitar/Vocals – Tom Whitty, Bass/Vocals – Henry Bates, Drums – Matt Unsworth. From Sussex, England.

How long have you been knowing each other and playing together?
We formed in 2006 in Sussex, England, Tom and Henry have known each other since they were in their early teens, and I got to know them about five years back.

”Enduring the massacre” is your first album, released in 2010, 2 years after the EP “Annihilate to Liberate” you did in 2008. And for this first album you worked with Chris Fielding in the famous Foel Studio in Wales. How did it feel to record in a place where famous bands like Napalm Death worked as well?
We felt very honoured to record at the same place as Napalm Death, as they’re one of our favourite bands. Tom even recorded the album with the same 5150 guitar amp Mitch Harris has used on their last few records.

How did you end up working with Chris? How did the recording go?
We’re chuffed with how the record came out – going to Foel definitely gave the CD a more organic sound than we’d first envisioned, which was great. Chris made the whole process totally painless; he worked incredibly hard to ensure we were 100% happy throughout the creation of the album, and was totally on the same wave-length as us!

The artwork of the album is very symbolic and very well done, tell us about it.
Colin Marks was on exactly the same page as us creatively for the cover art. We originally conceived the idea to go with the song lyrics for Enduring The Massacre, which is all about humanity destroying the earth, which in turn infects Atlas the Endurer, who is no longer able to bear the weight of the dying world.

The syntax and the words of your lyrics are quite complexed for a non-English speaker; could you tell us what they deal with basically? And who writes the lyrics?
Me and Henry write the lyrics - they have always dealt with the dark side of humanity and the world, because it’s something we experience every day. There’s a lot of ancient and biblical references, and also songs which deal with modern history – for example, ‘The Vitruvian Plan’ is a song about the horrors of racial profiling in Nazi Germany, tying in throughout with the 'anatomically perfect' concept of the vitruvian man.


Well I saw you in France at the Nautilys and the set really kicked ass, there were few people in the place because you were early but everyone I talked to really dug you ! You are only 3 on stage but you really “fill” the stage, how do you explain this maturity?
Thanks! To be honest, I can’t explain - Henry and Tom both have to play instruments as well as provide the vocals, so don’t get a chance to move around as much as they might like – having said that, we’re all fairly large chaps, so that probably helps!

Was it your first experience on stage abroad? Is so, how did it feel to travel Europe in a big tour bus? ;-)
This has been our first time playing out of the UK and it couldn’t have been better. The bus made things really comfortable, and all the other bands/crew were the coolest bunch of guys you could ask to hang out with for a month. The crowds were awesome as well – the French shows were definitely some of our favourites. I only hope that our future tours can match up to it!

The band reminded me of Dying Fetus straight away; tell us about your influences. To Tom: when did you realize that your had this powerful and strong voice? ;-)
We’re very influenced by the American death metal scene, especially groups like Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Skinless and Origin. People always say that they hear a lot of the ‘old-school’ in our music as well, which I’m guessing comes from influences like Deicide and Cannibal Corpse – as well as bands that got us into heavier music like Black Sabbath, Slayer and Iron Maiden. Henry originally did all the vocals for the band, but when Tom started doing his more guttural style we found the two played off each other really nicely so they ended up sharing vocal duties!

These are so many death metal bands, do you think that it is hard to impose yourself on a scene that is quite “busy”?
It is pretty difficult to get yourself noticed, especially in a scene which seems to have a lot to do these days with fashion and how many friends you have on Myspace or whatever. There are so many politics in death metal nowadays that we just don’t give a fuck about. We’re here to play heavy music and have a good time! I like to think that we can appeal to new and old school fans – plus there’s not a great many bands in the UK playing the more American influenced death metal, so hopefully we stand out a bit as a British band playing the stuff we do.

I’ve seen that you have a new album on the way, can you tell us about it? (release, production, lyrics…)
We’ve got a couple more songs to write and then the album will be ready. We’re looking to record it around mid 2011. This album is sounding as brutal as Enduring The Massacre, and yet injects a lot more groove into the music – there’s more variation in the album as well. Judecca was the last song we wrote on the previous album – and the new stuff is really sounding like a natural progression from that. The lyrics are again being handled in a very similar style by me and Henry – we’ll have more news about the upcoming studio sessions in the next couple of months!

What are your plans for touring? Do “big” bands already asked you as support bands?
Having made some great friends in the last year at home and abroad, we have big plans for touring in the new year. Without naming any names quite yet, we will play some UK shows fairly early on in 2011, followed by some international tours and festivals after that. Stay tuned for news!
