Interview BELPHEGOR Mai/Juin 2014

Peux-tu revenir sur ce qui t’est arrivé en Amérique du Sud en octobre 2011 ? Si j’ai bien compris, tu aurais pu carrément y rester… Et ta vision de la vie a-t-elle changé aujourd’hui ?
Ce qui s’est passé, c’est que j'ai choppé une infection de typhus pendant notre raid sud-américain. Le virus a totalement niqué mes poumons, je pouvais à peine respirer ou soulever quoi que ce soit. Des milliers de gens sont morts pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale de ce damné virus.
Oui, j'ai dû changer beaucoup de choses dans ma vie. Mais je ne me suis pas pour autant réincarné en chrétien ! Oui, ça m'a forcé à faire une longue pause.
L'opération à cœur ouvert qui a suivi l’infection a obligé les docteurs à me scier la cage thoracique. Après l'opération, t’as l’impression d’être un putain de zombie pendant des semaines. C’était l’Enfer. Il m’a fallu presque un an pour que tout puisse fonctionner de nouveau normalement. Ma guérison n’a pas été facile car tu ne ressors pas non plus indemne de vingt ans d’excès avec Belphegor : mon « style de vie suicidaire » avait causé beaucoup de dégâts et m’avait déjà presque mis à mort.

La sortie de l’album a été plusieurs fois repoussée depuis son enregistrement…
C’est dû à mon opération du cœur, et aux difficultés qui ont suivi. Quand je me levais, je me disais « fuck, je suis prêt à y retourner ». Mais une fois en studio, j'ai dû capituler parce que mon organisme, mon cœur et mes poumons m’ont dit que ce n’était pas possible. Une putain de sale période, mec !
Le plan était de finir l'album en un semestre, avec quatre sessions d’enregistrement, comme d’habitude. Je ne m’attendais pas à ce que le chemin pour parvenir à nos fins soit si dur. Ainsi, j'ai dû repousser la sortie de l’album quatre ou cinq fois à cause de ma santé. A un moment, j’ai arrêté de compter et ai pensé que je n’arriverais jamais à finir ce disque ! Mais les fans du groupe, mes amis et Erik Rutan ont continué à me motiver pour revenir, me relever et combattre pour faire ce disque. On y est finalement parvenu et j’en suis vraiment fier. Il sonne exactement comme je le voulais.

Je t’ai vu jouer à Mâcon en février 2013, et à cette époque, tu n’avais pas pu assurer le chant. Depuis, tu as retrouvé ton poste derrière le micro… Sens-tu que tu as totalement récupéré maintenant ?
Je vais bien maintenant et je suis reconnaissant envers les docteurs ici en Autriche, qui ont fait un très bon travail. Tous ces mois à craindre la mort, à lutter contre la douleur, cette longue convalescence, ça a été une sacrée épreuve psychologique, mon pote. Lors des premiers concerts du retour de Belphegor, je ne pouvais pas chanter. Je devais me concentrer sur mon jeu de guitare et voir si je pouvais réchapper à un show complet, car ça demande beaucoup d’énergie et d’effort. Tu peux imaginer à quel point ça m’a pris la tête : ce que je veux dire, c’est que Belphegor est mon bébé obscur. J’ai dû me battre pas à pas pour pouvoir refaire ce pour quoi je suis là depuis plus de vingt ans. Je savoure donc actuellement ce retour sur le devant de la scène !

As-tu eu besoin de changer ta manière de chanter ? Car en écoutant l’album, j’ai l’impression que tu chantes plus avec des growls death metal maintenant, avec un chant moins black metal dans l’esprit.
Le truc, c’est que c’est ce qui convenait le mieux. Tu as raison, la plupart de mes vocaux sont plus graves simplement parce que Conjuring The Dead sonne beaucoup plus death metal que les dernières orgies de Belphegor. Ce fut un challenge et une expérience intéressante : j’ai toujours chanté de cette manière sur mes disques mais cette fois, j’en ai fait plus car la brutalité de l’album le demandait. Le plus important pour moi est de varier mes vocaux car je ne veux pas chanter de la même manière tout le temps, c’est trop chiant. Ces vocaux variés sont une des marques de fabrique de Belphegor, tout comme le fait de chanter en trois langues depuis plus de vingt ans : en Anglais, en Allemand mais aussi en Latin, la langue de l’Eglise. Quoi de mieux que de blasphémer dans leur propre langage pour encore mieux se moquer d’eux ? Les parties en Allemand sonnent de manière très dure au niveau de la prononciation et apportent un feeling bien brutal.

J’ai été surpris quand j’ai vu que vous alliez enregistrer cet album chez Erik Rutan, en Floride. Pourquoi ce choix ?
D'abord, je dois admettre que c’était un rêve pour moi de venir enregistrer aux USA. C’est quelque chose que je voulais faire depuis longtemps. J’avais déjà approché Erik Rutan pour Bondage Goat Zombie en 2007, mais il n’était pas disponible. Et fuck, cinq ans plus tard, ça a été possible, ce qui est toujours étonnant et irréel pour moi. Combiner les éléments froids et dérangeants du metal européen avec le son brutal américain était le plan directeur, quand nous sommes entrés en studio. Le son qu’Erik Rutan a créé convient parfaitement à l'atmosphère des titres. Exactement que j'avais en tête. Si tu pousses ta chaîne hi-fi à dix, tu sens comme c’est brutal, direct et agressif ! Ça ressemble à deux mitrailleuses qui se répondent. Erik a été très important pour cet album et c’est un honneur de l’avoir eu dans l’équipe pour créer Conjuring The Dead.
C’est très important de changer parfois de formule, de musiciens, de studio, pour faire en sorte de garder de la fraicheur et de l’excitation. La stagnation, c’est la mort !

Plusieurs morceaux m’ont surpris sur cet album, comme la fin de « Gasmask Terror », qui m’a fait penser à une partie de guitare espagnole (lol… from 3’24 to 3’41) ou encore les parties mélodiques en arpèges de « Conjuring The Dead », « Rex Tremendae Majestatis » ou « The Eyes », ou la partie très thrashy de « In Death », pour ne citer qu’eux… Quelle était ton idée et ton état d’esprit au moment de composer cet album un peu atypique dans la carrière de Belphegor ?
C’est Serpenth qui a écrit la partie de fin de « Gasmak Terror », ce que tu appelles des guitares espagnoles. Pour moi, il semble plus judicieux de dire que c’est influencé par la NWOBHM. C’est la période où je suis venu à cette musique, j'adore ça ! Ça a eu un impact énorme sur moi et sur le son de Belphegor. Nous avons ajouté, comme toujours, beaucoup de trucs classiques au niveau des guitares. Je pense que c'est super en l'état actuel des choses, car il est hors de question de se répéter d’album en album.
On a aussi expérimenté : je n’avais jamais joué avec une vraie guitare acoustique pour les arpèges. C'était une idée d'Erik Rutan et les sons obtenus sont vraiment magnifiques. « In Death » parle de mon retour sur scène : c’est du thrash death old school bien rapide, avec des guitares précises et étonnantes, et un feeling sur le solo influencé par Gary Moore / Eddie Van Halen / Steve Vai.
Je veux aussi mentionner que nous avons écrit certains de nos titres death metal les plus techniques de notre carrière avec « Rex Tremendae Majestatis », « Conjuring The Dead » et « Legions Of Destruction », où pour la première fois, j’ai invité mon chanteur death préféré, Glen Benton et mon chanteur préféré d’avant-garde black metal, Attila Csihar. C’est excellent de se réinventer soi-même au travers du death black brutal.

La pochette de l’album est superbe… Comment s’est passée cette nouvelle collaboration avec Seth Siro Anton ?
C’était excellent ! Anton est un metalleux et je préfère bosser avec ce genre de gars. Actuellement, nous sommes en train de finaliser les illustrations du livret avec lui, et c’est magique ! La couv’ spectaculaire, le contenu brutal des paroles, cette évolution death metal… Les neuf nouveaux titres nous font entrer dans une nouvelle dimension d’intensité. Jamais nous n’avons sonné de manière si fraîche et pleine d’énergie.

Vous avez récemment tourné une vidéo pour le titre éponyme de l’album. Quelle importance donnes-tu à ce support pour la promotion du groupe ? Et en termes de censure, penses-tu qu’elle pourra être diffusée sur les chaines TV ?
Oui, nous avons tourné avec le réalisateur Walter Fanninger. La vidéo sera disponible fin juillet. Une chose est sûre, c’est que la musique tient ici le premier rôle. En ce qui concerne les clips, la plupart des télés refusent de diffuser du Belphegor. Malheureusement, les télés continuent de sucer la bite du « mainstream ». J’aimerais que ce clip soit diffusé partout, auprès des gens qui n’ont rien à voir avec le metal. Juste pour choquer toute cette horde de moutons qui écoute de la musique en plastique. De toute façon, c’est un bon support pour le DVD bonus qui va sortir avec l’édition limitée de l’album le 8 août. Mrs. Makani Terror, une modèle fetish tatouée, tient le rôle principal. Elle a fait un super boulot mais je ne veux pas en dire plus pour le moment.

10th album pour BELPHEGOR !!! Comment vois-tu ta carrière depuis plus de 20 ans ?
C’est incroyable de durer depuis si longtemps. J’ai eu l’honneur de faire le tour du monde plusieurs fois, de découvrir des paysages incroyables, de rencontrer des gens super. J’ai aussi pu partager la scène avec la plupart des groupes que j’adore. C’est juste parfait, mec et les gens ont ainsi pu se rendre compte à quel point nous étions entièrement dédiés à cette musique.
Notre attitude obscène va fonctionner à plein avec Conjuring The Dead. Il est grand temps que la communauté metal se reprenne une bonne dose de death black diabolique. Cohérent, brutal et sans compromis, la façon dont devait sonner cet album. “ Hail chaos ! Hail death ! ”

Comme Ashmedi de Melechesh, tu as choisi de gérer toi-même la carrière de ton groupe, étant leader et manager du groupe. Ashmedi m’a déjà dit que c’était notamment énormément de travail mais aussi de pression… Pourquoi ce choix ?
Bonne question, Will. Belphegor coule dans mes veines et oui, j’en suis le leader. Je veux garder le contrôle total, je ne veux pas d’autres personnes, de label, de manager, qui pourraient déranger la vision et l’idée que je me fais de ce groupe. Belphegor est toujours un diamant brut. Nous nous battons, bossons dur pour garder notre statut. Nous n’avons jamais changé drastiquement de style, jamais splitté. Nous avons toujours la flamme, et sommes toujours prêts à tout détruire.

Je suis émerveillé de voir sur votre page Facebook le nombre de personnes s’étant fait tatouer des illustrations ou des logos de Belphegor ! Que représentent les fans pour toi ?
C’est pareil pour moi ! C’est un sacré honneur, un réel plaisir, une vraie fierté, de voir tous ces gens se faire tatouer des trucs du groupe. Ça en dit long sur ce que le groupe représente. Que peux-tu demander de plus aux gens ? Je dois tout à ces die-hard fans, ils sont la raison pour laquelle nous sommes là à rugir tel un tank, à enregistrer des disques et jouer partout. Pour ces gens, nous essayons d’amener notre musique à un niveau supérieur à chaque fois, d’être les plus intenses et précis en live, de glorifier la musique brutale avec ces démons. Juste prendre du bon temps, quoi…

Vous avez donné pas mal de concerts en France en 2013 / 2014. Quelles relations entretiens-tu avec notre pays et les fans français du groupe ?
Yeah, nous avons passé pas mal de temps chez vous dernièrement mais il était temps ! Lors de la dernière décennie, nous avons un peu négligé votre pays et ce fut donc un réel plaisir de revenir. Nous allons aussi jouer dans deux festivals cet été, le Motocultor en août et le Festival de Triel début juillet. Il ne reste que peu de groupes capables de produire une musique aussi intense en live : Belphegor, en live, c’est comme une overdose, une explosion de TNT plutôt !

Can you return on what happened to you in South America in October, 2011? If I understood well, you would have die with this bullshit… And did your vision of life (and maybe way of life) change today?
Yeah, man, it's been hectic lately. We are in the final stages of completing the video, booklet layout, and bonus dvd that comes with the limited digipak version of the new album in August.
What happened was that I got a Typhus infection during our South American raid. The virus totally fucked up my lungs, I could barely breath or lift anything. Thousands of people died in world war because of this damn virus. Yes, I had to change a lot of things in my life. But I didn’t turn to a reborn christian.

Beyond the torments which the disease caused you, this long delay between the last concerts of Oct. 2011 and your return on stage in 2013, then your return with an album only now in 2014, have been able to put the band in danger (financially for example)? Were you supported for example by your label during this difficult time?
Yes, It forced me to take a long break. The following open heart operation involved the doctors sawing open my rib cage. After the operation you feel like a damn robot/ zombie for weeks. Hell yeah, It took me almost a year to come back and be able to perform again.
Also a lot of setbacks during the healing process didn't make it any easier. The +20 years of a “suicide life style” during my BELPHEGOR hellride did its damage and almost put me to death.

The release of the album was several time pushed away since its recording… Can you make us a chronology of the various events responsible for these delays?
My difficult heart operation man, and the following setbacks. When I'd stand up, I would think, fukk I am ready to go. I had to capitulate because my body, heart, lungs gave me a fukking "no", and I had to step back again, tough time man. RISE TO FALL AND FALL TO RISE, as one of our tracks of the last album BLOOD MAGICK NECROMANCE ( 2011 ) says, and that sums it up.

When you went to record the album at Erik Rutan’s Mana Studio, did you already know that you were not going to be able to sing your parts at once? And then, when did you do that finally?
The plan was, as always, to finish the album within an half year – 4 sessions as always. I didn’t expect that the way back get that rocky. So, I had to delay the Lp because of my health issues 4 or 5 times. There was this moment where I stopped counting and thought, fukk I will never finish this new badass album. But supporters of the band, friends and Erik Rutan kept on motivating me to come back, stand up again and fight to get this album done. At the end I was victorious and I'm really proud of the new album. It sounds exactly as I wanted it to sound.

I made you playing Mâcon in February 2013, and during this concert, you had not recovered yet totally and had not sing (your guitarist did). Since then, you found again your post behind the microphone… Do you feel that you totally recovered now?
I'm doing good now and I'm thankful for it. The doctors here in Austria did a great job. Really…all the months of fearing death, the pain, the misery, the long rehab, etc..it was a goddamn psycho trip, man.
The first shows as BELPHEGOR returned on stage, I couldn't sing, I had to concentrate on my guitar playing and see if I could survive a full show, which takes a lot of power and effort. You cant imagine how fukked up that all was to me. I mean BELPHEGOR is my obscure baby. Step by step I returned, and fought to get my life back and do what I do and enjoy for over two decades. It feels great to be back and front my band again and doing live rituals, to march worldwide and spread our miasma.

Did you need to change your way of singing (by listening to the album, I have the impression that you sing more with into death metal style, with deep growls, and fewer black metal shouts)?
I do it as I always have, whatever fits the songs perfectly. That’s the goal, man. Yeah, you are right - for many parts my vocals are lower than before because CONJURING THE DEAD sounds way more Death Metal than the last BELPHEGOR orgies.
It was a challenge, and an interesting experience,..I always did death vokills on BELPHEGOR lp´s, this time I did way more since the brutality of the album just demanded it. Most important thing to me is that the vocal department is varied, I don’t wanna sing a full Lp with the same vox..only high or only low..it's boring!!
The varied vokills are a BELPHEGOR trademark. I also grunt in three languages for over a decade. English, German and Latin, the church speech..it's utter blasphemy to mock them in their own language. German verses also sound very hard in pronunciation and give the overall feeling a brutal approach and atmosphere.

I was surprised when I saw that you are going to record this album at Erik Rutan, in Florida. Big change for Belphegor! At first, why this choice? How were the recording sessions with him? What sound did you want to obtain and how do you judge the obtained result?
First off, I have to admit that this is a dream because we haven't recorded an Lp in the USA and I always wanted to do so. I had this vision for a long time.
Man, I never thought this was gonna happen, but I always had it in mind. I also asked Erik for the BONDAGE GOAT ZOMBIE album, it was 2007 I guess, but he was not available. And fukk yeah, five years later, I got the chance to do it, which is just amazing and still unreal to me.
The combination of European Metal's cold and sick elements crossed with an American brutal sound was the master plan as we entered the studio, and it was the ultimate decision.
I mean, the soundwall that Erik Rutan made is just badass and fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the tracks. Exactly what I had in mind. If you turn the hifi up to ten, you feel how brutal, direct and aggressive it is. It sounds like two machine guns fukking and firing together.
Erik was very important to this album, and it's an honor to have him in the team to create CONJURING THE DEAD. Yes, it is important to challenge yourself – to change formulas, musicians, studios, to keep everything fresh and exciting. Stagnation is death!!

Several tracks surprised me a little on this album, as the end of "Gasmask Terror", which reminded me in a Spanish guitar part (lol…. from 3'24 to 3'41), either still the melodic parts in arpeggios of "Conjuring The Dead", " Rex Tremendae Majestatis " or "The Eyes", or the very thrashy "In Death", to quote only them… What was your idea and your state of mind at the time of composing this a little bit atypical album in the career of Belphegor?
Serpenth wrote this end part of GASMASK TERROR ( the first single what will get released in mid June ), what you call Spanish guitars. To me it sounds influenced by the ingenious NWOBHM, one of the best periods when it came to Metal musick. I adore NWOBHM!! That was also a huge important impact to me and for the chaos-soundwall of BELPHEGOR.
We added, as always, a lot classical stuff in the guitar department. I think it is great as it is, don’t wanna repeat myself each album, you know.
There is always some experimentation within our brutal style. I never before played the clear guitars with a real acoustic guitar, always with the e-guitar. That was an idea from Erik Rutan, and yeah…it sounds really magnificent. IN DEATH is about my return on stage and front my band again. It’s a fast Thrash – Death track, very old school with amazing precise guitars and some Gary Moore/ Eddie Van Halen/ Steve Vai influenced guitar leads.
I also wanna mention that we wrote some of our most technical Death tracks, such as REX TREMENDAE MAJESTATIS, CONJURING THE DEAD and LEGIONS OF DESTRUCTION where I have for the very first time vo-kill guest appearances from my favorite death singer, Glen Benton and my favorite Avantgarde/ Black Metal singer, Attila Csihar . It's great to reinvent yourself within the brutal Death/ Black genre.

The cover of the album is once again superb… How was this new collaboration with Seth Siro Anton?
It was great, man. Anton is a metalhead. I prefer to work with freaks and Metal supporters. Actually, we're still in the end process, only a few parts left to finish with Anton Seth, the whole artwork. Magick!! The spectacular cover, the offensive lyrical content, the Death Musick. BELPHEGOR´s nine new sound collages are a new dimension of intensity. We never sounded so fresh and full of energy.

You recently shot a video for the eponym title of the album. What importance do you give to this medium for the promotion of the band? And in terms of censorship, do you think that it can be diffused on TV channels?
Yes, we just shot the new video with director Walter Fanninger for CONJURING THE DEAD. We will release it in end of July. One thing for sure, Musick has absolute priority and thrones above all.
Regarding the clip, I mean, most tv channels refuse to give bands such as BELPHEGOR airplay. Unfortunately, they still suck mainstream's cock. I would like to see it get streamed before a bigger crowd, people that don’t have anything to do with Metal. Would be just great, man..to shock those sheep hordes who listen to plastic sounds. Anyway, it’s a good fit for the bonus dvd that comes with the limited digipak version on 8th August.
Ms. Makani Terror, a tattooed fetish model from Germania took over the main role. She did a great job and was totally into the role. I don’t wanna reveal to much here.

10th album for BELPHEGOR!!! How do you see your career for more than 20 years?
It's unreal that we lasted so long. I had the honor to travel the world a few times, and bring our ritual to loads of countries. Amazing sightseeing, met many great people and worked together with several artists and shared stages with almost all the bands that I adore.
It feels just great, man. It is no surprise after touring extensively worldwide that even more people have noticed our true dedication to musick.
Our obscene attitude will hit with full impact with CONJURING THE DEAD. It's about time that the Metal community get an overdose of Diabolical Death/ Black Metal. Consistent, brutal and without compromise, the way it's meant to be. Hail Chaos! Hail Death!

As Ashmedi from MELECHESH, you chose to manage yourself the band’s career, being a leader, a manager and a booker of the group. Ashmedi has already told me that it was in particular a great deal of work but also a lot of pressure… Why this choice?
Good question, Will. BELPHEGOR is the blood in my veins and yes, i am the leader. I want to have full control, I don't wanna have other people, labels, managers, etc. disturb my visions/ ideas, you know.
BELPHEGOR still is like a raw, uncut diamond. We fought and practiced, worked hard for our status. Never changed our style drastically, nor split up..we are still here and on fire, ready to rumble and to destroy.

I am always amazed also (and satisfied) to see on your Facebook page the number of people having been tattooed with illustrations or logos of Belphegor! What represent the fans for you, only a “market to conquer” or more?
Same here, man. To me it's a huge honor, a real pleasure and it makes me proud to see Maniakks who ink their skin with BELPHEGOR designs, that means a lot to me and the band's legacy. What more can you ask for? Really, that’s the greatest dedication. I owe these die-hard supporters everything, they are the reason why we are here and roaring like a tank. To be able to release lp´s and shredding worldwide.
For these guys, we try to bring the Musick to the next level, again and again. To get in a live situation more intense/ precise…and glorify brutal Musick with those demons. Just having a good time, you know..

You gave quite a lot of concerts in France in 2013 / 2014. What relations do you maintain with our country and the French fans of the band?
Yeah, the last months we did a lot of shows in France, it was about time, since last decade we neglected the country a little bit. It was amazing, always a pleasure to nuke there. We will also do two festivals in France during our summer raids.
The Motocultor festival in August and we headline the Triel festival the beginning of July. There are only a few bands left that can produce that haunting - raw atmosphere during a Death ritual. BELPHEGOR in a live situation is like an overdose, or lets say…TNT!

Back from the dead… Helmuth, leader de Belphegor, revient de loin ! Pour une fois, le sous-titre « Back From The Dead » est loin d’être galvaudé, tant le gars est passé près de la mort en 2011. Pas étonnant dans ces conditions que le nouvel album bien nommé, Conjuring The Dead, soit si sombre et orienté death metal. Helmuth nous explique la genèse de ce disque au travers de cet entretien réalisé en urgence à quelques heures du bouclage. Qu’il en soit publiquement remercié !
